Top Five Reasons To Attend A Professional Conference

PrintThe New York State SHRM Conference, HR Hat Trick: Innovate, Imagine, Inspire is right around the corner on September 15 – 17th, 2013 at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.  HR Professionals, Executives, Small Business Owners, Trainers, and Business Leaders Interested in Maximizing Human Capital and Personal Performance will be gathering to hear the latest in HR trends, issues and solutions.  I have the honor of working with a small team of fellow HR Professionals to help promote the conference.  It got me thinking of the reasons to attend professional conferences in general as well as the New York State SHRM Conference.

  1. Keynote Speakers:

This is an opportunity to hear a number of thought leaders in the HR profession.  New York State SHRM has Cy Wakeman, Jon Petz and Aman Motwane scheduled.

  2. Re- Certification Credits:

If you have earned your PHR, SPHR or any professional designation, you know how important re-certification credits are to maintaining the designation (and avoiding the hours of study and the dreaded exam).  Most conferences offer an opportunity to earn re-certification credits.  NYS SHRM has been submitted to the HR Certification Institute for review a possible 15.5 credits.

  3. Pre-conference Workshops:

Most conferences offer pre and post workshops that are offer the opportunity for more in-depth learning. They may be half a day or a full day and are sometimes included in your conference fee.   NYS SHRM is offering the following topics:  “Community relations programs”, “Engaging Your Highly Experience Talent”, “Pay, Play or Pray: Health Reform and Employer Compliance Issues” and “Becoming Indispensible”.

  4. Vendor Fairs:

A great opportunity to improve your Return on Investment (ROI) on your vendor dollars and look like a super star.  Learn what other vendors are offering and who the innovators are in that category.  NYS SHRM’s Solution Center will be full of vendors recommended by your peers.

  5. Networking:

Conferences offer the opportunity to connect or re-connect with colleagues who may be challenged with the same issues.  This may be the most important reason to attend a professional conference. Who better to talk with/share best practices with than someone who truly understands.

Look into upcoming conferences in your profession and register.  If you are an HR professional in New York (or nearby) and you haven’t registered visit www.nysshrm.org and sign up today!  Your New York State HR colleagues are looking forward to seeing you at HR Hat Trick: Innovate, Imagine, Inspire!
