Confidence

Years ago, someone I used to work for called me out of the blue.

He wanted to build an HR department where one did not currently exist and asked if I’d consider joining as Director of Human Resources.

I was honored … and a little surprised … to hear from him.

But there was just one small problem:  I had zero HR experience.

My background was in restaurant operations and learning & development.  I started to explain that … but he stopped me mid-sentence.

“That’s exactly why you’re the right person for the job,” he said.

He believed in my ability to learn, apply, and lead.  And, most importantly, he gave me the trust, space, and resources to figure it out.

I still remember the confidence that belief sparked in me, how it motivated me to rise to the challenge.

When no one believes in us, we often:

🤔 Second-guess our ideas

🤔 Hold back from speaking up or taking initiative

🤔 Stay within our comfort zones

🤔 Confuse capability with readiness and stop before we start

🤔 Operate from fear rather than curiosity

🤔 Miss opportunities to grow and the company misses the benefit of our potential

When someone does believe in us, we:

😀 Step forward with purpose and energy

😀 Try new things without fear of failure

😀 Learn faster because we feel safe to stretch

😀 Take greater ownership and accountability for results

😀 Collaborate more effectively and model behaviors that strengthen culture

😀 Build confidence not just in ourselves, but in others

That call turned into a lifelong mentorship and friendship.

His belief in me didn’t just shape my career, it shaped how I lead and coach others today.

It’s why I’m so passionate about helping leaders grow their confidence, unlock potential, create teams that thrive and deliver results.

Because confident leaders create confident teams.

And confident teams change organizations.

Have you ever had someone believe in you before you believed in yourself?

What difference did it make?

Please reply…I’d love to hear about it!
